Picked up a bottle for a closer look…

The last time I only had a copita in a bar, and I truly believe you need more than one copita to evaluate a mezcal. So I bought a bottle here in Colombia and drank it out of a wine glass in my Airbnb. My initial review seemed to be right on. It’s a really solid mezcal for a fraction of the price. I expected a noxious gasoline blowback on the nose and initial sip customary to cheap espadins, but didn’t get it. I got a little initial bite, then a woodsy/earthy note, followed by a slightly smoky finish. For $30-$40 at most distributors, I say go for it.

Wow, what a surprise

You can pick up a bottle of this for about $70-80 in the States, and it’s worth every penny. Ounce for ounce, this might be one of the best deals out there. Mouthfeel: Medium, not too oily but not dry either. Nose: Punchy fruit initially. Flavor: Tropical fruits. Lots of mango and pineapple on the palate.

I didn’t like pechugas that much when I tried the first 3-4 of them, but now I’m getting into them more and more. While I like Montelobos’s espadin better, this pechuga does have something to it! Nice and complex, not too smoky and you can definitely taste the sweet fruitiness of the actual fruit that went into the third destillation. Lots of citrus, apple and nutty flavors. Definitely one of the better pechuga’s I’ve tried!

One of my favorite sippers

Talking about commercial mezcal, it’s really hard to get a better mezcal for sipping on that price level. Smooth, earthy, enough smoke, nice level of heat

Solid mezcal for the price

Hard to complain when you’re drinking this mezcal. Just the right amount of smoke, super smooth and an easy drinker. This is one of my go-tos.

Montelobos Mezcal

Montelobos Mezcal from Oaxaca is one of Mexico’s best-selling mezcal brands and widely appreciated for its high quality, especially in comparison to its rather low price point. Founded by Dr. Ivan Saldaña, a plant expert, and Don Abel López Mateos, a fifth-generation mezcalero, Montelobos aims for a balanced and complex flavor profile. Committed to responsible production, they've chosen never to use wild agaves. The brand name combines the words “Monte” for mountain and “Lobos” for wolves. True to that name, Montelobos collaborates with The Wolf Conservation Center, supporting the protection of endangered wolves in Mexico. In 2019, the well-known Campari Group saw the brand's promise and acquired a major share.
