It has a consistent flavor that doesn’t challenge the palate but instead provides a steady, enjoyable experience. Its three-star rating is half scored because you can use it in so many cocktails. The finish is clean, with a hint of sweetness. For a bottom of the shelf, mass produced mezcal, it’ll do.
I’m not sure if 400 conejos is cheaper, but it’s definitely a photo finish. Putting the two in the same “log budget” category, I would mark Union Mezcal way ahead of the bunnies. I expected the standard artificial nose and gasoline punch, but it’s actually not quite that bad. You get a good deal of smoke and some sweetness. It’s nothing I’m going to show off, but probably a decent starter for a newbie, and a good cocktail mixer.
