Montelobos Mezcal from Oaxaca is one of Mexico’s best-selling mezcal brands and widely appreciated for its high quality, especially in comparison to its rather low price point. Founded by Dr. Ivan Saldaña, a plant expert, and Don Abel López Mateos, a fifth-generation mezcalero, Montelobos aims for a balanced and complex flavor profile. Committed to responsible production, they've chosen never to use wild agaves. The brand name combines the words “Monte” for mountain and “Lobos” for wolves. True to that name, Montelobos collaborates with The Wolf Conservation Center, supporting the protection of endangered wolves in Mexico. In 2019, the well-known Campari Group saw the brand's promise and acquired a major share.
You can pick up a bottle of this for about $70-80 in the States, and it’s worth every penny. Ounce for ounce, this might be one of the best deals out there. Mouthfeel: Medium, not too oily but not dry either. Nose: Punchy fruit initially. Flavor: Tropical fruits. Lots of mango and pineapple on the palate.
