Putting it in the category of Union, Montelobos and 400 bunnies, it holds its own. Like the others, fine for mixers, but probably not going to be an everyday sipper.
Just what you’d expect out of a mass-produced mezcal – you’ll get all the artificial flavor and over-the-top smoke that seasoned mezcal drinkers definitely DON’T want. Throw this in a cocktail and don’t show it off to friends. Or, go start your tractor with it.
Illegal joven for me is a bit too smoky and in your face. I wouldn’t pick it as my sipper of choice. In some cocktails like a mezcalita it is enjoyable though.
