Montelobos Mezcal from Oaxaca is one of Mexico’s best-selling mezcal brands and widely appreciated for its high quality, especially in comparison to its rather low price point. Founded by Dr. Ivan Saldaña, a plant expert, and Don Abel López Mateos, a fifth-generation mezcalero, Montelobos aims for a balanced and complex flavor profile. Committed to responsible production, they've chosen never to use wild agaves. The brand name combines the words “Monte” for mountain and “Lobos” for wolves. True to that name, Montelobos collaborates with The Wolf Conservation Center, supporting the protection of endangered wolves in Mexico. In 2019, the well-known Campari Group saw the brand's promise and acquired a major share.
I didn’t like pechugas that much when I tried the first 3-4 of them, but now I’m getting into them more and more. While I like Montelobos’s espadin better, this pechuga does have something to it! Nice and complex, not too smoky and you can definitely taste the sweet fruitiness of the actual fruit that went into the third destillation. Lots of citrus, apple and nutty flavors. Definitely one of the better pechuga’s I’ve tried!
